What is Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)?
The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an online application system operated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It is designed for citizens of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) who wish to enter the U.S. for tourism or business stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a traditional visa. Applicants must submit their details online, including passport information and travel plans, at least 72 hours before departure. Once approved, an ESTA is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows multiple entries into the United States within the validity period. In corporate travel, ensuring that employees have valid ESTA approvals is essential for smooth international travel to the U.S. Travel managers and TMCs (Travel Management Companies) often track ESTA status to ensure compliance and avoid denied boarding or entry issues.
